There are a number of reasons for a burning sensation in the throat, this includes a sore throat or swelling of the adenoids. GERD or gastroeophageal reflux disease, is a more common reason for a burning sensation in the throat. GERD can affect the upper and lower regions of the throat, and may worsen after swallowing. The condition can also leave a sour, acidic or salty taste in one’s mouth.

An infection or an allergy can lead to burning in the throat as well. It is also common for spicy foods to cause a burning feeling in the throat. However, there are a number of more serious health conditions that can lead to this discomfort.

Causes of Burning in the Throat

Allergies. Burning and irritation in the chest and throat can be an allergy symptom, and particularly result from airborne allergens. Reaction to pollutants in the air, as well a food particles, can lead to throat inflammation, nausea, headaches and other symptoms.

Acid Reflux Disease. Acid reflux or gastroeophageal disease (GERD), happens when stomach acid comes back into the esophagus. This leads to stomach irritation after a meal, along with nausea, a sour taste, which are common symptoms.

Eophagitis. This condition is characterized by the inflammation of the esophagus; there are several reason for this, including taking certain anti-inflammatory medication, infection, or a side effect of chemotherapy or surgery. In many case, the swelling of the esophagus come from acid reflux disease. Apart from throat burning, belching and pain in the chest has also been noted.

Flu or the Common Cold. A sore or swollen throat could be an indicator of a viral infection like the common cold or influenza. This is particularly common in the winter, especially for the elderly and children. Additional symptoms include runny nose, fever and coughing.

Remedies for a Burning Sensation in the Throat

If you have strep or a sore throat that causes burning, there are a number of home remedies and over-the-counter medications you can try. Spray and lozenges can be taken for relief. Acid reflux treatments like proton pump inhibitors and antiacid medicines can also treat acid reflux and relieve the burning in the throat. Allergies, the flu, and the common cold can be treated with medication as well. It’s best to consult your doctor before taking any of these medicines.

  • A mixture of turmeric powder and farm milk can also ease your burning throat. Add a little turmeric to a glass of milk and drink one cup a day to relieve symptoms.
  • Hot, liquid-based meal like chicken soup or vegetable broth can also offer you quick relief from sore throat if you’re suffering from a cold or the flu.
  • Honey can naturally sooth the throat as well. Mix a teaspoon or two of lemon juice with a teaspoon or two of lemon juice in arm water as an effective sore throat remedy.
  • A salt water gargle can also make the throat feel better. Add a pinch or two of salt to warm water and gargle three or four times a day for best results.
  • A sore throat due to acid reflux can also be treated by eating less spicy food and consuming a little buttermilk or coconut water after eating.

Percocet vs vicodin

Percocet and Vicodin belong to the same classification of drugs. Both are narcotics and both are prescribed for mild to moderate pain. There are special laws and regulations regarding their usage. Percocet is a Schedule II narcotic and Vicodin is a Schedule III. Percocet is used to treat moderate to severe pain for a short period of time. Vicodin is prescribed for long-term and chronic pain, and can be used to help control extreme cough. Evidently, there is a difference between their chemical compositions. However, because they are both narcotic pain killers, they both run the risk of dependency. Because of their addictive nature, they are not available over the counter.

Percocet is comprised of two main ingredients: Acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride. Acetaminophen is a fever reducer and pain killer. Oxycodone hydrochloride is another pain killer, but is also a cough suppressant as well.

Vicodin is composed of acetaminophen and hydrocodone bitartrate. The acetaminophen in Vicodin is used for exactly the same reasons as it is in Percocet. The hydrocodone bitartrate also behaves as a pain killer and cough suppressant — similarly to the second ingredient found in Vicodin.

It is important to note that the combination of ingredients in the Percocet — the acetaminophen and the hydrocodone bitartrate — not only make the medicine more effective for pain, but also help to reduce abuse of the drug. The same is applied to Vicodin’s ingredients.

Overdose

Overdoses on either Vicodin or Percocet can be severe, and may lead to liver damage or death. Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sweating, and confusion are some of the early signs of an overdose. The yellowing of the eyes and skin, darkened urine, and pain in the upper stomach are symptoms that can present themselves a little while after an overdose.

Emergency Room Effectiveness

In one study, Percocet and Vicodin are shown to be as equally effective at treating pain while in the emergency room, 30 minutes after ingestion. In this study it was also shown that those who took Vicodin had a higher incidence of constipation.

In another study, it was shown that Percocet is 1.5 times more potent than Vicodin when administering the same dosage.

Common Side Effects

Dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, mild nausea, blurred vision, and drowsiness are the common side effects for Percocet. At 10mg, Percocet produces more subjective side effects than Vicodin does. A potential subjective side effect includes the high it gives off.

In addition to all of the side effects mentioned above, Vicodin can also give users ringing in the ears, headaches, and can alter moods.

Warnings

Because Percocet and Vicodin are so closely related, they both come with the same type of warning. Patients who have suffered from alcoholic liver disease or consume more than three alcoholic beverages a day should consult with a doctor before use. While taking either of these drugs, the patient should not consume alcohol or they run a higher risk for developing liver disease. Pregnant women should discuss taking these narcotics with a doctor first, because it can cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms in newborns. Neither should be taken with any other narcotic pain medications, sleeping pills, sedatives, or muscle relaxers.

Addiction

Because of their mood-altering natures, Percocet and Vicodin are both highly addictive drugs. Individuals who have been taking either of these medications for long-term pain should gradually wean themselves off of the drugs; otherwise they may end up suffering with withdrawal symptoms.

Percocet is considered to be a more addictive substance since it contains a derivative of morphine. Despite this, though, some studies suggest that comparative doses of either of these drugs leave little difference in their potency for abuse.
